Trip to Isle of Skye 2018Least worst weather option!

Had been planning to go to Skye for a while, I want to make some star trail photographs at the Old Man of Storr and the Quiraing, both spectacular features in their own right.

Unfortunately while the weather was kind by not raining on us, (camping) and it produced some clear skies during the day, the nights were mostly full cloud. :thumbsdown:

My objectives were to reconnoiter the Quiraing and the Old Man of Storr, if possible get photo's and star trails.

Also I wanted to complete a visit to the Fairy Pools in Glen Brittle, which I curtailed two years ago due to my son Christophers difficult behaviour.

Another target for the camera was the Etive river bridge on Ranoch Moor, an iconic concrete bridge, one of a pair on Ranoch Moor built in 1931-2.

I also wanted, if possible to visit Logan Botanic Garden, a branch to the Edinburgh Botanic Garden, right on the West coast near Stranraer.

Almost all my photographs were taken with the D3 and the 24-120mm f/4.0 VR lens.

One thing I hadn't planned for was the Eilean Donan Castle which greeted us bathed in a beam of sunlight as we approached the Kyle of Lochalsh early in the morning. I pulled over and we spent all morning photographing the castle. The light was difficult to say the least with only brief gaps in the clouds. I took quite a few exposures and bracketed a lot but I managed to get a couple of reasonable photographs in the end. We called again on our way off the island in better light and grabbed a few more, which were much easier.

This was on the way onto Skye.

And this was on our way back a few days later.

2^nd Post

This is the Quiraing which I wanted to use as a foreground for a star-trails photograph. It's accessed by a narrow hill road and there is a car park in an old quarry. It's very popular with climbers. The scenery is amazing. To actually get up there is a bit tricky but for star-trails from this location, it's reactively easy.

As you can see it's dull and overcast. Totally different on a nice day.

These are some of the pix I took in Glen Brittle on the Fairy Pools trail, about a mile alongside the river Brittle as it carves it's channel in solid granite from the Cullin Hills to the sea.

These waterfalls are probably the most popular countryside place to visit in the whole of Scotland, there were hundreds of visitors walking up and down the path while we were there.
