That applies to anything from abroad, especially if you have been purchasing from the EU.

What people forget is that you have to pay import VAT & handling charges - our wonderful "deal" only covers CUSTOMS duties & quotas.

Watch for many unhappy customers who did not realise what leaving the EU means in reality.

Additionally you can expect considerable delays due to the fact there is a shortage of shipping containers and container ships are queued up outside UK ports at the moment .... shipping companies have trebled the cost of shipping a container from the far east to the UK. Guess who is going to pay!

My wife is a retired HMRC Officer and has been banging on about this imminent train wreck since the referendum. :banghead:

Mind you, she has been buying for England every since and especially as saving rates disappeared.  :needsahug:

It's her birthday tomorrow and for once I have not been able to think of anything she wants, hasn't already got or is in transit. Cant take her out for a meal so she will have to put up with my cuisine and CAKE!

I have bought myself a new lens in her honour.

Yes another thing to add to the bonus of good things delivered by Brexit.
No doubt we will hear that this is why people voted the way they did so they could be poorer!

I worked for HM Customs & Excise for 40 years - I bailed out before HMRC was formed

I have already noticed gaps in the fresh produce aisles of Morrisons and we could end up only getting what is in season in the UK - I notice PLENTY of Brussels sprouts!!!

The HMRC rules on cameras and lenses are very wooly and vague.

I know there are loophole that can be exploited by dealers or people doing personal imports as in the past I have know people who have exploited these loopholes.
The loopholes are around classification of cameras and their function/use.
I cant remember the exact detail but at the time it seemed to me that it was another example of the rules not applying to the haves, but certainly applying to the have nots who didnt have the knowledge!

Much the same as the saying by DJT that he could shoot somebody in New York with many witnesses and still get away scot free.  Much the same applies in UK or most countries as the legal system is not about justice but about clever barristers showing how smart they are.  There are many examples of this in UK with people getting off speeding tickets on technicalities that are fringe, rather than on substantial unfairness of the ticket.

So did my wife.

Leigh on Sea  .......Were you based at Southend? Wondered if you knew Rodney Howard?

I worked in Southend, London & Nottingham over the years, in HQ, VAT, Investigation & Training.

Rodney Howard is not a name I recognise, but then I have forgotten so many!

Yes Rodney moved about a bit too...the old 'move to take promotion' civil service routine.
He had two spells at Southend, some time in Northern Ireland and Liverpool. He ended up '2 down from God' spending his time flitting back and forth to Brussels on 'policy missions' before finally retiring about 15?yrs ago to Suffolk.

He has been a good family friend for many years. When he was Surveyor in West Norfolk he tried his hardest to get my wife to push further up the HM ladder as he considered her capable of much loftier position. But any move to take promotion was always a problem for us ...as my job was too good a 'golden handcuff'....until they offered me serious 'bugger off money'. By then it was too late for Jans career as she had a brain tumour and had to retire early due to ill health.

Those were the reasons I switched to being a photographer/ graphic designer....so I could run my business from home.

Anyway, enough of potted life history thread drift. 😆
