I bought for 300 usd.,a D2xs incl. a Nice bag from Lowe-Pro ( Nova 5 AW ) a couple of Flashes ( Metz 4O ..SUNPAK 555 ), some thingies, thought I had scored a DEAL !!..

But Oh..

The mirror stays up , will not budge..I`m guessing the shutter is at fault,Nikon will Not fix it...it`s too old..

That is Not all...

I also bought a 14 - 24 2.8 for 900 usd.,...

Zoom ring sticks at 16mm to 14 mm...focusing moves...only sharp at 20 cm,..looked at a youtoob vid.,..showing there`s full of chips in that computer lens...

here`s the vid.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7R9I-BlD5m0

Anyone got ideas of how to proceed..or do I hide under the blanket awaiting the arrival of 2030...it can only get better right ??!...

Seriously , someone outthere who is willing/able to help out a ,by now ,Impoverished fellow photog.

Sigh..

A sad story Novicus, was the lens bought on eBay? If so you should have some means to return the lens and get your money back?

It's not really the sort of lens you can just delve into without a lot of experience of what you are doing.

Sorry to hear all that. :needsahug:

Even if Nikon won't repair the D2X maybe an independent repairer might?

If it were my problem I would contact these people...

https://advancedcameraservices.co.uk/repairs/

....but then they are just down the road from where I live and have pieced back together my lenses and cameras several times successfully.

I suppose it's a question of what cost is involved in repair. I suspect the lens may be a more cost effective choice. But until you ask you don't know.

Of course, though the camera may be too old for Nikon to repair, the lens should still be young enough.

o.O

That lens was it on UK you purchased?
I was looking for 14-24mm f2.8AFS so I could use on my Z7 with ZFX adapter and saw a similar lens that was jammed at 16mm. I think this lens is susceptible to physical damage as it is heavy awkward to change rapidly.
I eventually found one in good condition optically that was also ok cosmetically but not like new!

The Danish equivalent of Ebay ( owned by them ),..I bought it here in Danmark...

Robert Congrats with that D800 , so that D3 is not the " last Dslr " after all then..:-) and as You suggested I will get in contact with the Vendor, He did Write that the Lens was a little hard to turn ??..Yet it takes Very Sharp pics., ...Ha, the thing does NOT focus at all !!

Eric Thank You for the link, I will contact them to see if it`s Feasible to fix the D2Xs,.. I was Aware that the D2 series have Issues , notably Shutter Issues , yet I was Confident that All bugs had been Ironed Out with the S models ,..aparently not, ..so perhaps advanced camera serv. can help me out, ..I saw their rates, and they seem reasonable enough..could you give us an example of a repair you had them do?..

J K , how much did you fork out for that 14-24 ?..and how does it perform ?

I would have thought you have a strong claim through eBay to get a refund on the basis it's 'not as described”. I would certainly pursue that first.

ACS have done a number of repairs for me. One that stands out was while photographing a sports complex I had to dash down to the swimming pool (there was momentarily no one in the pool so the water was still!) from 2 floors up. Running round corridor with concrete painted walls I had lodged my D3 + 24-70 into the holster without fastening it in.

On one tight turn in the stairwell the whole assembly flew out and hit the wall. The lens mount stayed fixed to the D3 but the rest of the lens flew out in 8 pieces.

I finished the assignment with my spare camera and lens, dropped the camera with the lens bits into ACS on the way home.

The whole assembly was reassembled, calobrated and ready next day! I actually felt the lens was sharper after that....so maybe they calibrated it better.

o.O

On another occasion I bought a 500mm Sigma from eBay. When I received it the whole mount assembly was loose. I contacted the buyer who actually confessed he had an estimate for servicing and they told him it was a bit loose. He agreed to refund the cost of the service quote....about £200.

I took the lens to ACS on a Friday afternoon just before closing.
David (the owner) took the lens apart while we talked (undoing solder joint and redoing it after securing the inners.) I said 'what about a service'. He said “doesn't really need one...I cleaned the bits that were loose”. Asked him how much for the 20min repair....”give me £10' said.

If you decide to get a repair done by them and you need any help, I would be happy to do so....but can't raise your hopes of a £10 repair

Re ACS, at Watton, they repaired a D200 for me as a 'service' then converted it to wide spectrum, UV to IR. The D200 was low shutter count but had been dropped on the right hand side strap anchor and it had dinged in, damaging the printed circuit board inside.

I don't remember the cost but it was very reasonable, they had a faulty camera they cannibalised the PCB from. I don't use the UV-IR D200 a lot but it's still working OK.

They have also serviced lenses for me, both Nikon and other makes, no issues, they 'found' some iris blades for my Nikkor ais 300mm f/2.8, focusing was like silk when it came back to me. A joy to use.

I still love and use the D3, the D800 is a different tool altogether. I doubt I will photograph Motor sports, rugby or football with the D800! Nor use it for general photography. Night sky and studio work only I think, maybe landscapes but I don't really know how to do landscapes, maybe I should learn...

It seems to perform perfectly.
Its AF is fast and correct.
I got it for £650 delivered to my door. A very very good price as other similar lenses were going for £825.
I am pleased with my purchase as I need an AFS lens wider than 24mm.

I have a Sigma 12-24 f4.5 that works on my D850 but does not AF on the Z7/FTZ adapter. Likewise my 20mm f2.8 AF. So this 14-24mm f2.8 AFS is a great acquisition exception that I had to get a 150mm filter holder and a graduated grey filter but I have found these at good prices as well. Exoctic sizes go cheap!

Eric :

The D2Xs I bought from an elder couple incl.lots of goodies for about 200 quid , she told me it was a heirloom from her late father and that she did not know anything about photography, the NOVA 5AW made by Lowe-Pro looks as New, the flashes work flawlessly , bits and thingies I`ve no idea what they`re for , MH-21 , Two ENEL 4 A batts., respectively on pos.2 and pos.0...the bag was bulging , clearly they had cramped as much in it as possible as to say " here, all yours "..my own fault for not inspecting more thoroughly, ...I switched on the camera,LCD sprang to life ,camera fired..so I do not feel that I`ve been had , allow me to tell you what it is that` s rather odd about it..

Nikon D2Xs ;

Switching on camera , everything seems to work, LCD lights up...menu works...Mirror is in the " UP " position, ERR shows on top LCD ...depressing shutter button , mirror flips Down and then Up again..ERR disappears..depressing shutter button again causes the Aperture Lever to Move..depressing shutter button again (3rd time )...Mirror flips down/Up...it seems as if the mirror " thinks " that the shutter is open...everything goes so fast that it s difficult to know for shure, but I`ve got the impression that the shutter is Not working..yet it does not look damaged at all, on the whole the camera looks as new, certainly well cared for...and when ACS can give me a decent quote ( there`s still the freight cost Denm.- England -Denm ) then I ill send it in, for looking at what I got , the D2Xs has costed me say 100 quid..if ACS can fix it for a reasonable fee then I would have a very Nice Camera for an okay price...just trying to be fair here :-)

The 14-24 2.8 is a Different Vendor/Story...I am in correspondence with Vendor right now , who does not understand a thing , for on his/her D750 / D7200 it draws Sharp..Vendor has other items for sale , so seems legit...but I dunno..and just for the record ; My Kodak DCS Pro SlrN ...Nikon D1...D1X..D3S..D3X work Flawlessly on All my other Nikkors ...Just saying :-)

Don't suppose it's stuck in the Bulb setting?

Have you tried a two button reset?

Before you go any further, try replacing the clock battery, CR1616, it lives in the main battery compartment. Then check that the camera is set to something sensible and have another try.

Two button reset..changed clock battery...mirror is up..depress button..mirror down/up again...press again , aperture lever comes down..turn off camera, mirror down/up , aperture lever comes back up..

sigh..

How else can it be stuck in the " bulb" setting ?

You need to get some service diagnostics done. Nikon used to provide these free if you go to them. Probably not these days!

Yes, I `m convinced that You`re right...but Nikon danmark said the D2Xs is too old...like being caught in between the proverbial Hammer / Anvil..

Robert, do you think that Your mate her in Dk. can do that..?..Who was he again ?..( Please ) :-)

Erik Lund, Copenhagen, to be found on the Nikon Gear forum.

http://nikongear.net/revival/index.php

I think I gave some sort of contact info in a previous thread about a lens of yours.

One possible suggestion... Take out the main battery and the clock battery and leave for several days, to allow a complete reset of what the two button reset can't touch. Seems like a glitch in the firmware, also perhaps, worth doing a firmware update, even if it's on latest firmware?

Perhaps clutching at straws here but it's zero cost.
