I am not convinced that 45mp is ever necessary, provided you fill the frame reasonably.
I like my landscape pictures to be very fine grained or grainless.

I don’t notice the Fuji AF being slow…..maybe it’s me getting slower. o.O
In fairness I haven’t used it in speed challenging situations.
I had been considering getting a longer lens for it, but my previous experience with the slow AF of the XT2, I had back in the day (which was part instrumental in me coming back to the D850) has tempered my enthusiasm.
Iain’s comment about lens balance with the Z8 is another reminder of how the Fuji felt unbalanced with a big lens and your comment that the AF of the XT5 (which I guess would be the same as X20) is inferior to Nikon Zs, make me close my wallet on the thought of a long lens purchase.

Yes indeed.
The Fuji X20 AF is slower than the Nikon Zf or others in the Z range of cameras.
It is not mega different except if you are shooting sport or BIF.

I tend to agree and think that for most things 24mp is enough. The problem is when doing wildlife no matter how long your lens is its never enough so some cropping is needed so 45mp come in handy then.

Yes, wildlife and perhaps professional sport are about the only occasions.

I’ve found that even then, you need to keep noise under control more with 45mp. Maybe it is a Sony sensor peculiarity, but noise creeps in uninvited. And when you enlarge the subject, the noise gets bigger and more obvious too.

I recently looked at some bird photos taken with the Sony A7 compared to the A1 and there’s no doubt that, although the A1 was a sharper image, the A7 had less apparent noise at the same iso.

Of course noise and sharpness can both be addressed in computer. It’s been said many times that the sweet spot for FX sensors is closer to 25mp than 45mp.

Edit: I just realised the new Sony A7 iv is now 33mp. What have they learnt??
I wonder if they have adopted the A1 menu system or retained the frustrating old A7 mess? Might be worth a look.

A fair point, but realistically are you ever going to do much cropping on a landscape photo?
It’s cropping that draws attention to grain/noise which is more the domain of long lens subjects.

I think I would rather take what a 25mp sensor gives and make it sharper, than reduce noise (make softer) a 45mp sensor reveals after cropping. I’ve always been a noise hunter. lol

I believe that the A7iv has the new slightly better menu.
