Nice shots - the Lanc was down here at Southend - sadly didn't have the camera when it took off over the local road - went straight over the top :-)

The Spit & Hurricane actually flew over our house - we are about 2km from the end of the Southend 23 / 05 runway ...

Nice - bit like taking my MG back to Abingdon

When I was very young and an aircraft enthusiast, I used to go over to the scrapyard at the airport - they had old Spitfires and other wartime machines, but no Lancs! There was a Miles Magister that was flown from Hendon to Southend during the war - it had been rigged back to front and the pilot complained - he was told jokingly to sit backwards or upside down, whatever he needed to do - 20 or so mins later he landed at Southend - he just got on with it!

Lovely pictures of wonderful aircraft Jeff, one slight criticism...  The frozen prop's, your shutter speed is a bit high?

I think they look much better with some form of movement in the propellers, be-it a full spinning disk or a blurred prop, frozen isn't natural to my eyes.

I remember a discussion on here many years ago about photographing cycle racing and allowing the spokes to blur, yet getting the rider and bike sharp, it isn't easy!

Is that the airfield behind Manor Farm (Close?)? I used to stay with my mate at the married quarters there, backing onto what is now the Broughton Airbus factory. I remember rounded hangers and perimeter track just behind his house, which actually backed onto the perimeter fence.

First off rob it was a multi plane show props and jets , the camera was set to get sharp shots and I would rather have a sharp one than a blurred one with props spinning . Just my take on things a habit from fast moving birds I suppose .

Next off your correct on location it's now a very built up area and luckily you can gain access by signing in at security and going to the chocks away cafe which has a large viewing area .. you can also view from a building site that runs parallel to the runway .but yesterday was to bloody hot to hang around and I left early ,a wise move as take off was delayed for two hours due to sea fog.

The lanc holds a special place in my heart as my uncle got shot down in one and killed in WW2 and my dad always talked about him ,only one out of 8 serving brothers that lost his life

Likewise, although not directly personal.  My early days reading was mostly about 617 Squadron, Guy Gibson; Enemy Coast Ahead, etc.  My family were all army but I have a keen interest in aircraft and the RAF.  I stumbled by accident on a Mildenhall airshow, years ago, it was amazing, the US airmen all had BBQ stands and were dishing out real American burgers and hotdogs, we had a ball.

One of my wife's uncles was shot down in a Lanc over the Zuider Zee - he didn't survive.

Mildenhall was just down the road from my mum's place -  we used to pop in from time to time.

I did an apprentice engineer course with the National Gas Turbine Establishment, next door to Farnborough and our hostel was by one of the gates to RAE - we always went to the air show there - fabulous, especially when the Lightning stood on its tail and went vertically supersonic! Mind you nothing was as breathtaking as 9 Scimitars taking off in diamond formation, the noise was incredible!

I was on camp, quite close to the runway at RAF Leuchars when a Phantom was practicing for an airshow.  It come up the runway, inverted, flipped the right way up then stood on it's tail and quickly disappeared vertically into the clouds.  It was beyond loud, the whole place just shook.  Probably contributing to my poor hearing! LOL

Back in 1970s I knew some of the pilots at Leuchars as I was at Dundee University but had a farmhouse that I rented in Fife near Cupar.
