Having just returned to the Nikon fold and settled on a D500 I needed a lens to go with it , acquired a 300 pf for the weight and a 1.4 and 1.7 tc combo .. but I found I was getting weird artefacts over water ? Did my research and for my birding needs it narrowed the choice down to 3 lenses the nik 200-500, sig 150-600c or the Tamron 150-600 g2 .. While on a recent holiday in Devon I took advantage of being near to mifsuds to pop over and view all 3 lenses together and thanks to the owners generous PX offer settled on the Tamron ,which it turns out he had mistakenly priced up as a mki version. I did manage a few shots while away but nothing special so was a tad suspect on whether it was the right choice or even a good copy . But once home and able to check better I found it was front focussing a bit a couple of hours spent curing that has gotten me some superb images to date and I’m more than happy with this lens for the sub £500 cost

Sounds like you got a great deal from Mifsuds. Well worth the tinkering required with a DSLR AF system. They say that mirrorless always get the focus correct but up until recently with my Zf, Z8 the AF was not always super sharp but seems to be resolved in the last 6 months either through me being ultra careful on my focus point setting or the firmware upgrades have finally got it performing correctly.

The sharpest mirrorless combo I have used is the Olympus om1 with a 300mm f4 which takes 1.4 and 2x tc’s with no ill effects and gives in FF terms a effective 600/840/1200mm reach I have lots of sample shots at all these lengths . You do lose the flexibility of the zoom though .and the best alternative is there big white lens which is upwards of 6K . My lad has just bought a canon R7 with a 200-800 rf lens and is really struggling to get decent results with it , there to my mind have been a lot of experimental bodies and lens combos produced by both canon and Nikon over the last few years to leapfrog into the mirrorless world .. A lot of problems I feel tends to be older owners not coping with complex menus either combined with weight issues as the user marketplace tends to be the older generation

The advantage is a full set of settings can be saved to one of four Photo Bank in camera so when the banks are all setup it is easy to swap between the setups. I also think that people expect mirrorless to be lighter than a DSLR, it may be lighter but not by a significant amount especially with long telephotos attached.
