I have obviously led a sheltered life...I needed to look up what steam punks were.

Lovely images Malcolm...can I ask what if any processing the first image (with the lady) had? There seems to be an almost HD sheen to the image.

I don't know if it was deliberate making the eyes moody and shaded but (for me) the eye highlights are perhaps not strong enough. They are sort of at odds with the overall high contrast of the image. Just an observation.

I've never used that lens but the D3s is (still) a lovely camera.

Love the second image.
Is it shot with a blink of flash?

Like Eric says the first image looks like it has a touch of HDR going on!
I like the 24-120 f4 and even though it is quitea large lens I use it as my standard carry around lens.

Interesting pictures, I wonder if it's a filter (or two) from the Nik collection, I have just used the detail extractor Nik filter on a flower pic and it has a similar 3D effect, I think the Bleach Bypass filter can do something similar in combination.

All comments welcome good or bad personnel choice. Here are both start images. A fair bit of processing took place, I wanted to add a gritty feel to image, & I agree eyes are a bit dark & will correct when final final image is ready. Also added fire X 2 & smoke, oh yes & I have a smoke M/C !!!

Final Final Image. maybe? I always leave it for a week or so, then if I still like it will print, or carry out further adjustments. Will probably replace reflection in glasses.

Looks good to me Malcolm, I would be very interested in an outline of the process, I am always keen to widen my knowledge of processing images.

If I may say so, it doesn't seem to have a visible signature of any process in the image, which suggests there is something subtle going on.

I mentioned the Nik filters, they can be used very subtly or in an outrageous way if that floats your boat. All depends on the image and what you are trying to achieve.

I used topaz to cut girl out of background, & a mixture of photoshop, onone, & topaz to add a look I visualize how I want finished image to look. I dont use any actions as every image will always be unique to me. The finished image was a combination of 8 different photographs. This image is with a more natural look on her face I used frequency separation to even out skin tones, and keep texture of the skin.

Have just looked steampunk up myself, frankly I don't do these 'punk' things myself but that's irrelevant. Very interesting, I took a look at google images and although there are many good pics among them for me none had the appearance of quality and depth that these images have.

Thought the camera D3S was topical.

Have discussed the first image with my son Chris(12) and he wasn't taken in, I asked him if he felt it was authentic, he said the fire didn't look right (the top part doesn't match with the lower part) and from that the whole image fell into question for him. I noticed that myself but overrode it in my mind because on the whole the composite is very convincing and it appears theatrical, so leeway is given.

A slight concern for me is the lack of ash under the fire...

An aside, when I was about 7 we had a very similar range in our kitchen, complete with kettle which was always on the hob, I made a pot of tea for my mother but didn't put the kettle back on the hob properly and it fell off, the boiling water badly scalded my foot, so I am very aware of kettles on open fire hobs, even in photographs!

Perhaps the only other thing I might suggest is that, as the saying goes... There is no smoke without fire, usually the reverse is also true. The area behind the kettle seems to be fully saturated, no signs of heat shimmer or loss of saturation of the background behind the kettle, as there probably would be if wood was burning on the fire.

When I did that composite of the Tornado from Great Gable I used a light de-saturation brush to create the illusion of the exhaust gasses.

Hi The images used to create the end result.
1 The background was taken in August 2014 East Ashling W.Sussex,on Nikon D800; iso500; f13.0; 1/1000.
2 The plane/foreground was taken at Manor Farm (where they filmed the wartime land army series for BBC) taken in June 2015, on Nikon D810; iso400; f8.0; 1/1000.
3 The smoke was created by making a brush from the cloud,taken in Oct 2012 on Nikon D2x; iso100; f11.0; 1/500.
4 The steampunk taken at New Malden Surrey in July 2016, on Nikon D3s; iso200; f4.5; 1/500. (the guys name is Montague Jacques Fromage)
