When I bought mine I looked at 5.1 but couldn't afford one so had to go for a 3.1

I was same, that's why I bought the 4.1 which is firmware upgradable, I understand it electrically and physically identical to a 5.1. I paid £500 for a basic spec 4.1 and upgraded the processors, memory, video card and drives, I slung out the two CD/DVD drives and replaced them with SSD's.

Yes I did the same. The latest version of the MacPro (black dustbin) was hugely expensive but the silver tower versions 3,1 were affordadle and the last versions were in short supply or hugely specified which made them very expensive. I have two near identical MacPro 8 core 3GHz units, one in Spain, one in UK.

Is Mojave worth upgrading to? High Sierra suits my needs and upgrade does not seem to offer much of advantage unless there a unheralded speed or security aspects. On a different software tack the other day all the Lightroom programmes just disappeared off my Mac overnight. All the other Adobe bits remained. Reinstalled and new version of LR running fine and found old library. Just odd.

Cant see any major value on upgrade to Mojave. Some small twiddles but I prefer to use my MacPro with 30" Dell Ultrascan (High Sierra) than my MacbookPro with 13" screen (Mojave). In response to my query with Adobe about CS6 issue they have gone silent. I have phoned back three or four times, twice the particular guy who was managing the case was busy and said he would phone back in 30 mins, still waiting, and twice the calls timed out. Hmmmm. How much have I paid Adobe in license fees for two copies of Adobe Photoshop from v5.5 through to CS and to CS6, and then Design Suite CS6 and two copies of Lightroom as well as Photoshop Elements (4 copies if you count v3, 5, 7, 11). Maybe Captain Patch will be more helpful.

Yes, unfortunately they have their set ideas on what software can run on any given hardware. They do support their hardware for quite a long time, I had a free of charge repair on my MacBook Pro at 5 years old and even now, at 7 it has only just reached the OS limit at High Sierra. I haven't seen anything in Mojave that would make me upgrade to get it. (I have several MacBooks).

Just a note... Before considering upgrading ANY Mac to Mojave, investigate the new disk formatting protocol. My understanding from reports is there are issues with Apples new drive format which seems to come with Mojave. It seems to be a once only procedure, once the new format had been applied to a drive it can't be re-formatted again. I haven't checked this out myself because I am unlikely to update to Mojave anyway but if anybody out there is considering updating to Mojave, tread carefully.

I suggest that you dont do a one big step migration but go El Capitan ==> Sierra ==> High Sierra ==> Mojave. I think my move from ElCapitan ==> High Sierra in one step probably broke my Photoshop CS6 install. Remarkably the InDesign and Illustrator parts of Design Studio CS6 still work perfectly. Just the Photoshop part is misbehaving. I must phone Adobe UK Support and raise merry hell as they havent got back to me for four weeks! They promised me a reply within 24 hours!
