| Looks very yellow and green. Oh no that is the reflection from the green monkey. Nice capture Iain. Glad that you are liking the new kit.

| Begs the squestion why Nikon dont have a 400 mm AFS lens other than the f2.8 unit! Everyone is tired of waiting for the update for the 80-400 f4.5-5.6 AF, it really needs AFS on it especially with all the new lesser spec cameras such as the D5100/5000/3000/3100 that can only use AFS lenses.

| It was ISO800 @5.6 and 1/320 and the bird was about 25-30 feet away and I have cropped the image to what it is.

| Am I right I saying the 7d is a 'DX' size sensor and the 400mm is an' 'FX' lens...so the effective focal length on your shot was 600mm ish?

It's slightly smaller than DX at 1.6x (insteadof 1.5x) crop This means the equivalent is 640mm Another advantage/disadvantage of the Canon system depending on whether you are shooting a wide or a telephoto Btw. I would strongly discourage purchasing af-s lenses as one day you will end up kicking yourself

| I know nothing about Canon cameras since the Canon F1n. Awesome camera that was owned by a flatmate of mine when I was at university. He had the Canon and I had the Nikon F2. Then a few years later came the Nikon F3 which was just like the Canon F1n but nicer.

| If you feel you need a lens like the 10-22, I recommend that you purchase the Sigma equivalent One day you might get a 5D (MkIV perhaps) and then you will be glad of the extra resolution Unfortunately, AFAIK, you must shoot a Full Frame image then crop later since I'm not aware of Canon supporting the method used in DX crop mode on Nikon FX cameras (DX Crop - in camera crop with viewfinder darkening to permit the capture of 15MP images at 1.5x magnification. The main disadvantage is the smaller viewfinder area available and the rearrangement of the, thankfully many, focus points) DX crop allows a Nikon D800 to shoot with a 400mm as though it's a 600mm similar to choosing a 7D with a 400mm (of course the 7D is much cheaper)

| Until the D800 the DX crop mode on FF was a waste of time in my opinion as it reduced the mp's too much.

| you will love that setup for a long time ian ,its good and fast ,canons 7d burst mode is to die for ,the 400 f5.6 can be used all day long at 5.6 without a missed shot ,the only problems being you cannot extend the range via a t/c and the 3.5 mtr close focussing will grate on your nerves after a while . if by any chance your after a good buy my lad is selling a sigma 100-300 f2.8 os only six months old hardly used (its to heavy for him) at a good open to offers price .if your interested either p.m me for details or you can see it advertised on "bird forum"

| *Update* Ok, I've been using the 7D for just over a month and my findings so far are,
The focus on static subjects is fast and positive. However the focus on moving subjects is hit and miss and the keeper rate compared to a 1D or the Nikons with the 51 point focus system is poor. Noise levels are on a par with the D300/D300s but the files will accept noise reduction software better. As for the Canon 400 f5.6 lens I can't fault it and still can't understand why Nikon don't do one.
