| new canon 650d announced tonight again nothing really new from the canon stable ,so glad i swapped to nikon basic specs the ones that i find count are 18.mp nothing new there . 9 point af system nothing new there either 5 fps yawn i waited a long time for them to announce the 60d hoping to upgrade and it seems they haven't learnt from the uproar about it and the loyal customers they lost over it

| Thanks Jeff, We are still waiting for the D400. Although Doug says I am talking rubbish, in my opinion the D300 wasn't a significant upgrade from the D200. The D400 should be. Sometimes manufactures have to release *something* to keep their sales flowing, if significant updates are not ready for market, they tinker. Things have changed since the film days, when a body version had a sales lifespan of several years. We seem to be reaching a plateau in the DSLR development curve. I wonder where we go from here. You can only increase pixel counts so far and once we have ISO 128,000 and can capture black cats in dark coal cellars at f22 there isn't really any place left to go...

| There is a D600 (FX) due soon as well. Glad I opted to go for the D800. It is more tricky to use but the image quality is fantastic when you get it right. Still havent had a chance to use it for my flamenco shots.

| personally i,m very happy with my d7000 ,although getting a d200 for the wife was a eye opener as its a damn good camera despite its age ..the nikon range of cameras imho leaves most of canons way behind ,but i have to admit for pounds for quality canon lenses have the edge . but in saying this i,m really only taking into account my wildlife photography needs .so please don't take it as read

| Most of the lenses have strengths and weaknesses. If only the prohibitive cost of some of them! The consumer lens can be a bit of a lottery especially with the wider zoom ratios but the pro lenses are for the most part as good as they get. I understand that some of the long lenses have very weak feet, not at all suitable to provide a rock steady mount, which I feel is inexcusable. No good having the best glass in the world and the worst mounting.

| Well depending on the camera you prefer and the type of photography you do I would say that the Canon and Nikon range are way ahead of the rest. That said Leica (if you can afford the inflated price tag) do produce great lenses and cameras but their 'value for money' rating has to be very low. Of course value for money is not a quality standard but a very subjective indicator. Given a money no object stance I would probably have a Leica M9 and a full set of lenses as well as my Nikons, not to mention a Leica S2 and lenses plus of course the Hasselblad H4 with lenses and P80 back. But that would have made a significant hole in £250,000!!

| Back when I bought the D70, Canon brought out an 'equivalent' shortly after (can't remember the model). I remember holding in a camera shop and just not liking the feel in my hand. Ever since I have liked the way almost every Nikon feels, every model just feels well built and somehow right, where as Canons for me just feel wrong. (I haven't held a D800 or D4 yet but would bet the trend would continue). The only Canon I liked the feel of was the 1D flagship model, which was OK but not as nice as my D3s. It may sound silly, and I know it makes no difference to the output, but it does make using the Nikons a more enjoyable experience for me and since I do this for fun that's important.

| I agree Rich. The last Canon I preferred to my Nikon of the time was the Canon F1n which was nicer than my Nikon F2 Photomic but then came the F3. Like you I prefer the Nikon ergonomics but Canon do have a nice set of long telephotos that are produced to suit all pockets and needs.

For a long time their film SLRs were just exceptional and few Nikon cameras could hold a candle to them (Eos33 for example was in many ways superior to any Nikon at a similar price) Canon video have always provided a Nikon like product philosophy with features like mic input being available in many cheaper models (and until a couple of years ago - standard coldshoe mounts) while competitors had long since removed such features Their slr credibility, for me, was ruined when they released the 300D which was cut back and crippled compared to the Nikon D70 in every way imaginable I feel like their bean counters have had their finger in the design pie ever since (until now, finally, with models like the 7D, 5D MkIII etc starting to deliver some truly appealing functionality)

| I dont know about the batteries I. Know th contacts have to be shielded now which is very sensible. The LP-E4N battery is a Lion battery but I dont know why Canon havent reduced the battery pack and battery area of the camera.
